EMIS: Environmental Management Information System
for industrial estates or parks, harbors and ports, special economic zones and individual industrial enterprises
EMIS provides a complete, largely automatic, fully integrated,
state-of-the-art ICT solution for the environmental management: planning,
assessment, compliance monitoring and impact assessment as well as emergency
management for industrial enterprises or groups of co-located enterprises in
industrial parks or zones, compliant with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, and in support of the new European IPPC directive,
2008/1/EC, on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, including industrial emissions,
and noise monitoring and management for construction, operations, and traffic.
Automatic, scheduled and event driven tools for monitoring and reporting
are combined with interactive models, embedded into a real-time expert
systems framework that supports a participatory approach of all enterprises
in the estate, and at the same time provides continuous quality control
and quality assurance functions, implementing a TQM philosophy supported by
artificial intelligence technology for optimal operational control.
The Management Information System integrates a number of advanced analytical functions for
operational real-time control (based on multi-criteria optimization tools)
but also scenario analysis, strategic planning, and optimization, within a shared common information basis:

The Industrial Environmental Management Information System combines
advanced tools for strategic planning (including stochastic risk analysis)
and environmental impact assessment with real-time monitoring,
on-line reporting, and operational control including
emergency management options. Other embedded models address land use dynamics,
air quality assessment and emission control, and coastal water quality.
Another important set of tools addresses resources (such as water, energy) efficiency and
optimization as well as emission control strategies (including GHG and CO2)
using complex multi-objective, multi-criteria optimization
and techno-economic valuation. Multi-criteria optimization
can be performed for each individual unit, as well as for the
entire park or zone, or group of installations, identifying possibilities for synergies
and net benefits from cooperative strategies towards "win-win" solutions
for increased resource and energy efficiency, improved environmental compliance.
Related topics are the estimation, trend analysis, and forecast of resource consumption patters,
emissions and waste streams, and the identification of saving potentials, from BAT to BATNEEC.
Implementation and business model:
EMIS utilizes high-performance cluster computing for detailed
quantitative analysis (dynamic, 3D distributed nested grid
simulation and optimization models)
with with a distributed (web-based) implementation for easy access
to an unlimited number of local subscribers. This makes it possible to share the costs
over a large number of users, that also cooperatively contribute to the essential
updates of the information system.

- Model supported monitoring (now-casting) and reporting
(continuous and for user defined periods up to multi-annual)
and continuous regular forecasting (up
to 120 hours) of all environmental impacts from normal operations
(atmospheric and aquatic/marine releases, waste streams and hazardous
waste, operations and construction noise) with continuous and
scheduled on-line compliance reporting,
alerts and alarms based on monitoring networks, cascading advanced 3D
dynamic simulation models and real-time expert systems technology.
- Risk assessment and emergency management in the case of
accidental release of hazardous materials with different
release scenarios, evaporation, chemical fires, BLEVE/explosion,
soil contamination, and spills including surface-, ground- and
coastal water quality. Continuous modeling and 5 day forecasts make
the system immediately "ready" for emergency simulations.
