GEOGRAPHY

Lisbon is lying about 9ºW longitude and 39ºN latitude in the Southwest of Portugal and this is one of the southern capitals in Europe. Situated on the Atlantic coast, it distances approximately 300 km to Algarve in the South and 400 km to the northern border with Spain.

Lisbon lies on steep terrain on the north bank of the Tagus estuary covering 84 km2 and is known as “the town of the seven hills”. The city and its surroundings form the Greater Lisbon that covers about 1000 km2. Characterized by flat terrain close to river estuary, the region has a complex system of hills reaching 500 m.

Several municipalities make part of the Greater Lisbon. One of them, Lisbon Municipality is coincided with the Lisbon City limits and sub-divided on smaller 53 administrative units .
