ABSTRACT
SMART Project supported within The Fifth European Community Framework Programme (INCO-MED) aims to
develop, implement and test a new, participatory but scientifically sound and relational approach
to planning and management of the coastal zone.
Partners from Italy, France, Portugal, Austria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Tunisia
comes together to meet a number of scientific objectives of the project with five different case studies
in each of the Mediterranean partner countries.
In Turkey, Gediz River Basin located in the western part of country has been selected as
a case study area, which brings about two major and closely related problems in the western
Anatolia along the Aegean Sea.
The project also provides the design of a common database that will hold all necessary data
for individual case studies which then will be used to
perform a comparative analysis between partners to project current situation
and suggest some remedial actions.
