Photochemical Box Model: Data Requirements

The PBM system includes 3 main components:
  1. A meteorological data editor (for hourly data) with its embedded expert system, and preprocessor
  2. An emission data editor (and initial and boundary conditions) with its embedded expert system, and preprocessor
  3. The dynamic Photochemical Box Model and its graphical user interface itself.
The data requirements of the system include:

Meteorological Data:

  • Date (day, month, year; starting time is fixed at 05:00 local time);
  • Location (latitidue, longitude; this is implied by the case study and model domain and its GIS coverages used as backgeound for the emission inventories;)
  • Wind speed (hourly, meters/second; the wind speed is assumed to be measured at 10 m above ground)
  • Mixing height (hourly, meters above ground)
  • Ambient air temperature (hourly, degree Centigrade)
  • Total solar (TSR) or ultra-violet radiation (ly/minute)
  • cloudiness (coverage, height).

Air Quality Data:

  • Initial condition concentrations (ppm)
  • Boundary concentrations (ppm)
  • Observed concentrations (ppm, optional)
  • Hydrocarbon speciation factors for initial concentrations
  • Hydrocarbon speciation factors for boundary concentrations
  • Hydrocarbon speciation factors for observed concentrations (optional)
Ambient concetrations are often available as non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC). Since there are actually hundreds of specific compaounds in this class, only a few major structural categories are chosen to simulate the range of all NMHC compounds. The speciation factors divide the gross measure of NMHC compounds into these various categories (see the description of the model chemistry).

Emission Data:

  • Source emission rate of CO from area and line sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of CO from point sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of NOx from area and line sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of NOx from point sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of total hydrocarbons (THC) from area and line sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of total hydrocarbons (THC) from point sources (kg/hour)
  • Source emission rate of hydrocarbon classes from point sources (moles/hour)
  • Source emission rate of hydrocarbon classes from area and line sources (moles/hour)
  • Ratio of NO2/NOx in area and line source NOx emissions
  • Ratio fo NO2/NOx in point source NOx emissions
  • Ratio of CH4/THC in area and line source THC emissions
  • Ratio fo CH4/THC in point source THC emissions
