Status: Italian Regulatory Body for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection

Principal functions and activities: DISP is the substantial part of the Italian regulatory system for nuclear safety and health protection of nuclear workers, the public and the environment. Its tasks include: analysis and design verification; inspection and enforcement during construction and operation of nuclear power plants; radiation protection and environmental radioactivity monitoring; control of the industrial use of radioisotopes and fissile materials. Its role is performed through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach aimed at covering with a consistent policy the following areas: safety analyses of nuclear installations; plant and equipment surveillance, health and environmental protection; technical standards development; nuclear emergency management support; regulatory research; risk management services; and international co-operation.
