This is the largest predator on the African continent, standing at 125 cm at
the shoulder and weighing up to 240kg. It preys principally on wildebeest,
impala, zebra, waterbuck and kudu. It is basically a nocturnal hunter although
it has been seen hunting during the day, normally it can be seen lazying in the shade during the day. The lioness does most of the hunting, while the male
distributes the spoils.
Lions move in prides of up to 12 members. The male has a heavy mane that
protects it from injuries to the neck during fights.
