Potential Contamination Index

The calculation of a pollution index (IC) involves the combination of the risk factor with that of pollution generation. To that purpose, we used the values of IR calculated previously and an indicator of traffic flow (F), considering that the greater the traffic flow, the greater the generation of potential pollution. We then calculated IC with the following formula (Zellner, 1995 ; Zellner et al., 1996):
