Automotive Transportation as a Source of Air Pollution

The automotive transportation is the most important activity in the generation of atmospheric pollution (Miller, 1994). It works with internal combustion motors. The process of combustion is a chemical reaction between the fuel and the oxygen in the air. This process, in the case of internal combustion engines, is inefficient and, therefore, incomplete, producing black smoke (particulate carbon), high concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile hydrocarbons. Moreover, sulfur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and lead are generated.
