GAIA addresses both issues of environmental planning and management
as well as information technology.
Its primary objective was to build multi-media tools for environmental
education and management, in a collaboration of 10 countries from Europe,
Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
GAIA uses a set of case studies that cover a range of topics
including urban air pollution (Argentina, Mexico), epidemiology of communicable
diseases (Argentina), and sustainable urban development (China, India),
deforestation and land use dynamics (Thailand, Venezuela), land use conflicts (Zimbabwe)
and coastal zone development (Egypt).
These case studies are structured within a common framework of
issues and indicators derived from Agenda 21.
The inital set of case studies provides a nucleaus and templates for
subsequent projects and examples leading to a set of
cases for comparative analysis, but also designed as material
for environmental education.
