The European Regulatory Framework

The AirWare software system is designed to assist implementation of European and national environmental regulations, guidelines and Directives.

A summary of the European regulations relevant for Air Quality is available as an
on-line PowerPoint slide show.

The DG XI Guide to the Approximation of EU Environmental Legislation summarizes the EU regulations and Directives relevant for the accession states; this provides a convenient overview of EU environmental regulatory framework; specific sections relevant for air include:

• Air Quality Regulations
• Air Quality Standards
• Waste Management (including incineration)
• Industrial Pollution Control.

The key Directive for air quality is the so-called Air Quality Framework Directive, the
Directive on Ambient Air Quality Assessment and Management (96/62/EC)
and its so-called Daughter Directives, recently consolidated and amended in

Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on
